Set against Israel's war for independence, "Earthly Remains" is a fascinating and fast-moving novel about an exotic and highly dangerous archaeological discovery.
The opening scenes in the fledgling state ofg modern Israel set the stage for a story that soon delves into the ancient past. The novel begins in Jerusalem with the sale of ancient copper scrolls to two archaeologists - The American Dr. May and his rival, Glasher.
May's assistant, Sara Garner, is an Israeli translator of Ancient Hebrew. When May and Garner meet Paul Devoren, an American reporter, May tells Devoren what he has bought and offers him a large amount of money if he works with them.
The group sets out for the Dead Sea to follow the instructions translated from their original scrolls. Once there, they make an unexpected an astounding discovery--one that would threaten the very foundations of Christianity.
Near an abandoned monastery of a little-known religious sect, they discover a headless skeleton. Following instructions found at the site, they enter a cave where they find a mummified corpse showing the marks of crucifixion. Other shocking evidence leads to the unthinkable; the headless skeleton is that of John the Baptist and the mummified corpse is that of Jesus.
Paul and Sara are convinced that the story must be told in the United States. Yet others try to prevent any word of their discovery from ever being made public.
"Earthly Remains" has all the ingredients: compelling, believable characters, an intricate and fast-moving plot, and a realistic dramatic background. It casts light on the fundamental beliefs of Christianity and the shattering consequences that might follow if those beliefs were suddenly put in serious doubt.
