The Secret Garden
Mary Lennox (Kate Maberly), a little girl who recently lost her parents, moves from her home in India to her uncle's manor house in England. Mary's parents spoiled her with material things but neglected her emotional needs leaving her a sad, bitter little girl. In England Mary becomes friends with her maid, Martha (Mary Crossley) and Martha's brother, Dickon (Andrew Knott), a little boy who can talk to animals. Together the children help Mary to heal emotionally. In her ramblings Mary discovers her late aunt's secret garden. The garden has been locked and neglected since her aunt's death ten years earlier. Mary enlists Dickon's help to restore the garden. Although her uncle's manor is run by a strict housekeeper, Mrs. Medlock (Maggie Smith), Mary manages to explore the gloomy rooms and discovers her cousin, Colin (Heydon Prouse), who is considered frail and sickly and has been hidden away. Repulsed by Colin's demanding ways, Mary remembers how her friends reached out to her and, in turn, reaches out to Colin. The children start visiting the secret garden together where they are free to dance and play and be children.
