Dry immediately with a soft white cloth andplace in a spot that is away from direct sources of heat. There areseveral chemicals that may be purchased to make your hat waterresistant. To remove everyday dirt from smooth leathers, periodicallywipe them with a water-dampened (not wet) cloth. Ground in dirt andstains may need to be taken to a professional cleaner. Saddle soap issometimes helpful in the cleaning of your leather hat. To keep thegarment soft and supple and retain its natural oils lost during normaluse, you may periodically apply a leather care lotion with a soft clothusing a circular motion. Suede hats and Nubuck hats should be routinelybrushed and vacuumed to remove topical soil. Spills should beimmediately blotted with an absorbent white cloth whenever they occur.A soft bristle brush can be helpful in the removal of dirt and willhelp restore the soft suede or Nubuck nap. An application ofScotchguard or a silicone based waterproofing spray is helpful to repelwater and dirt. Avoid picking your hat up by the pinch as this willeventually cause it to crack or become discolored from the oils in yourfingers.
