Dry immediately with a soft white cloth and place in a spot that is away from direct sources of heat. There are several chemicals that may be purchased to make your hat water resistant. To remove everyday dirt from smooth leathers, periodically wipe them with a water-dampened (not wet) cloth. Ground in dirt and stains may need to be taken to a professional cleaner. Saddle soap is sometimes helpful in the cleaning of your leather hat. To keep the garment soft and supple and retain its natural oils lost during normal use, you may periodically apply a leather care lotion with a soft cloth using a circular motion. Suede hats and Nubuck hats should be routinely brushed and vacuumed to remove topical soil. Spills should be immediately blotted with an absorbent white cloth whenever they occur. A soft bristle brush can be helpful in the removal of dirt and will help restore the soft suede or Nubuck nap. An application of Scotchguard or a silicone based waterproofing spray is helpful to repel water and dirt.
