This does not pretend to be a learned history, other people have tried to write such a thing, in the remoter past with variable degrees of success.Nor does the author claim that it contains a detailed record of all the Midland locomotives.
For many years past, Mr P. C. Dewhurst has been collecting and publishing the closer details of Midland locomotive lore, and it would be impertinent besides very difficult to plant a rival vineyard.
Rather the present author has tried to give a short general survey of the Midland Railway, and of the trains which worked it, in days to which we cannot return.
