Moldova is located in Eastern Europe, between Romania and Ukraine. Historically part of the Principality of Moldavia, it was annexed by the Russian Empire in 1812. It was reunited with other Romanian lands in Romania in 1918.
At the end of World War II, it was annexed by the Soviet Union. During this time (1945-1991) it was known as The Moldavian SSR.
The Republic of Moldova became an independent nation on August 27, 1991. Moldova competed at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, Georgia under the IOC country code MDA. It was the first time the nation participated separately from the other republics of the Soviet Union.
