Few actors suffered as much physically for their craft as did Chaney. He used all methods of make-up to achieve the desired effect from strapping his arms to his sides to using teeth so large that he was in constant pain. (Courtesy of Google) As many of you know, I specialize in finding old stories of long ago that have been overlooked, seldom found and rarely read. Here is a feature story entitled Lights Out for Lon Chaney as it appeared in this old American News Magazine of 1930. Quick now, name the most famous monster in the movies. Who did you think of, Quasimodo? The Hunchback of Notre Dame. Sure you did and it was Lon Chaney himself who portrayed the agonizing cripple. But here the author recites the other roles as in "The Unholy Three", The Road to Mandalay, Mockery, Mr. Wu, The Phantom of te Opera, The Unknown ". Chaney worked as a paper hanger and laid carpets at the Antlers Hotel in Colorado Springs before catching on as an extra playing cowboys and Indians. His first "heavy" role was in Hell's Morgan Girl but his break came in The Miracle Man where he played a Frog and the immortal jest, "Don't step on it, it may be Lon Chaney" Although much of this piece is devoted to his great screen work, a decided amount is written of his personal life. He speaks of his devoted wife, of the Union of Screen Actors of which he always carried and displayed his cards, his charities and his soft spots. All in all, a loving tribute to one that will never be forgotten - Lon Chaney - The Man of a Thousand Faces.
