OLD PADDLE WHEELERMEMORABILIA IS RAPIDLY DISAPPEARINGAs many of you know, I specialize in old western Americana. Stories that are in out of the way old western magazines and books that have been over looked, rarely read, seldom found and rarely seen. Here is "Death on the Sacramento," by Leo Rosenhouse. On July 4, 1849, you could have shot a cannon down the main street of Sacramento and not hurt anyone. One year later on July 4, 1850, there wasn't walking room, a hotel room, or room for a horse!!!. It was the discovery of GOLD AT Sutter's Mill in the Mother Lode at Coloma that made the Sacramento River a stream of persistent traffic where fortune hunters floated on anything in their eager zeal to get from San Francisco. It was the beginning of the end for the proud, highmasted, deep-bellied schooners which were being replaced by dependable steam powered vessels, better know as paddle wheelers. Most of them were sternwheelers with huge wooden and metal paddle wheels at the rear, but there were also sidewheelers that had a double paddle wheel midship, one on either side of the boat. The Forty-Niners called the Sacramento "River of Gold." Indian tribes living on its banks, referred to it as the "Stream of Fearful Death" because of the deadly, swift stream when a fast snow melted in the Sierras and sent torrents of water downstream to cause tremendous floods and havoc. The author recites the history of the first steamboats there, then the heavier ones that were slower. That lack of speed demanded a smaller but faster steamboat. Demand from the gold rush became so powerful that even boats from the Mississippi were moved to the West. New corporations were formed to massive but lavish ships such as the CHRYSOPOLIS, affectionately referred to as The Bride of the Golden River. Details the outfittings, accommodations, trips and adventures of these great old paddle wheelers. And then all the imitators and copycats built the ANTELOPE and DEFIANCE with finely polished hardwood floors and a richly furnished dining room enhanced by paintings of old masters. Then the author tells of the boiler explosion on the R.K.PAGE, the breaking up in the middle of the river of the McCLELLAN and the EUREKA and the sinking of the WASHOE after her Captain pushed her over the limit in an attempt to pass the CHRYSOPOLIS (this is a great retelling) and the explosion of the YOSEMITE that killed hundreds but the pilot, Captain Fourat survived, and the explosion of the JULIA across from Alcatraz caused the glorious days, the dangerous and reckless days of the tune whistling paddle wheeler to become extinct. Perhaps the Sacramento River misses those perilous times - but - then that's history!!! Goes on and on about the great old history of paddle wheelers. Because old steam boat history was printed before indexing, the names of the great steamers have been lost to history. The rare steamboats of this era are index below. I hope you appreciate the effort. Time and space prevent me from writing more but I believe you will find this story a different telling. My wife says that after I find and buy this, read it, research it, write about it, take a picture and scan it, pay eCRATER an entry fee and commission, I make about 50 cents an hour. This is a really fascinating story with great pictures. You will love it as it was published in this old western magazine of many years ago.
