Fluidization involves the process of running water through a filter medium fast enough to cause it to suspend and develop a flowing movement of its own. When this occurs, 100% of the media's surface area becomes exposed, increasing its efficiency to filter or react with the water.
With the SandMan filter system, sand is the filter medium of choice for several reasons: thousands of grains fit into a small area, providing a very high total surface area for natural, nitrifying bacteria to grow upon, sand has a highly irregular surface area, further increasing its surface area vs. spherical shapes, and sand is essentially inert with no secondary effects on water quality.
An additional prime benefit to fluidization is that each grain of fluidized sand is continuallly bumping into other grains or the filter walls. This creates a "self-scrubbing" condition which minimzes the development of a bio-layer or slime which can reduce filtration efficiency. The sand in the biological chamber of the SandMan filter is virtually amintenance free.
