In the Western world today there are numerous pharmaceutical companies, many of them with an annual research budget in the millions of dollars, not to mention their sale turnover, who can provide sterile injections, pills, lotions, drips [sic?] and ointments for nearly every condition that their medical colleagues can diagnose. In this vastly streamlined technology, what place is there for the herbal remedy?
A close look at this question reveals the simple solution that there is, in fact, no basis for competition between modern and herbal therapeutics; we are talking about one and the same line of work — the use of Nature's best resources to combat disease. For the drug industry itself, sophisticated though it may be, relies very heavily on plants for its medicinal preparations. Many of the plants described in this book are cultivated on a large scale by the industry, which needs them for their active constituents. In other cases, where chemists are able to make drugs in the laboratory, the drugs they make are often based on natural substances; simple herbal cures are adopted and adapted, as more is learned about the chemistry of natural compounds and the pharmacological action of such compounds in the human body.
Nevertheless, there are people who align themselves on the two ends of a pharmacognostic tug-of-war rope: some saying that herbal medicines are the only true and heaven-sent means to a full natural health; and their opponents maintaining that such a view is cranky nonsense and that the use of herbals is antiquated, ineffective quackery. Only the synthetic medicines of today, they say, can be of any use in therapeutics. The truth, of course, lies with neither of these extreme views, and the aim of this book is to describe some plants which are and have been used with benefit, and in what ways."
