South Africa - 1850. A dangerous land of staggering wealth and tropical beauty. On the eve of the Boer war, she meets a fearless and powerful man who ignites her deepest passions.
She once loved Maxwell Stanhope, but now he would do anything to silence her A clock chiming downstairs proclaimed that it was ten o'clock. She must write Anthony a letter. Stepping out quietly into the hall, she felt her way downstairs. Just as she reached the door of the study, she froze. From within the room she heard the low but unmistakable sound of voices.
"...she leaves tomorrow. We'll conceal the shipment of stones in her trunks. You can retrieve them in England." The speaker was Edwin Hayward.
Davina stood rigidly, inches from the closed door. These were ruthless thieves who stole diamonds and were plotting to use her to smuggle them out of the country. What would they do to her if they found her here? With her heart pounding, she turned to inch away from the door.
"Did you hear something?" Maxwell demanded.
Footsteps sounded and the door was flung open. Maxwell stepped out into the hall and thrust a candle in Davina's face. "Oh, God!" he muttered, grabbing her arm. "How much did you hear?"
"It scarcely matters what she has heard. We have no choice but to silence her," said Edwin with authority. Davina opened her mouth to scream, but a gag was thrust into it and her arms were locked behind her back. Kicking and twisting wildly, she fought to free herself, but the grip tightened and she was dragged into the study and the door was closed.
