Antique Albert Jacob Thewalt German 1L Lidded Beer Stein c 1900 Marked 221
> Rare antique German stoneware beer stein made by Albert Jacob Thewalt, in excellent condition
> Stoneware portion measures 9 inches tall and domed and hinged pewter lid measures an additional 2" in height; stein measures 5.25 inches across at the bottom
> Stein weighs 43.9 ounces
> Stein is marked 1L above the top portion of the handle
> Stein underside bears the triangular windmill and partially enclosed "T" logos of Albert Jacob Thewalt, whose stoneware business was founded in Hesse-Nassau, Prussia in 1893
> After over a century in business, Thewalt ceased production this year, 2009
> Stein underside and handle area are marked 221, Form 221 being a design of Wilhelm Anton Kamp, who designed the first stein, dating the piece from 1897 to very early 1900's
> Stein is imprinted in German: "Seid ihr vereint in fröhlicher Runde So feiert beim Bierkrug die schöne Stunde" ... a rough English translation being: "When united in a merry round then celebrate the happy hour with your beer stein."
> Artwork is exquisite, featuring three colorful panels in raised figural relief:
>>> PANEL ONE: A barmaid stands with her hand on her hip, taking a moment to chat with two seated male customers
>>> PANEL TWO: A man plays an autoharp while two women stand nearby listening, a calendar or newsprint sheet on the wall bears the year 1902
>>> PANEL THREE: Two men set out for a hunt with their rifles over their shoulders and dogs on leash while one bids farewell to a woman
> Stein handle has detailed ridges on the sides, a molded thumb rest on the top portion and, on the lower inner portion, a small finger grip ridge

> Pewter lid is decorated with scrollwork and a pointed dome, fits snugly with no wobble, and is in excellent condition with no corrosion or damage
