Ever wonder where piggy banks originated? Families used to make simple coin banks out of a clay called "pygg," and once a few potters misheard the request and made pig banks! The invention soon spread, creating a lasting cultural institution. This priceless creation's an improvement over the older models though - Not only is this a piggy bank but it will teach and train your little boy or girl all about money - how to count it - how to identify it - and how it all adds up.
Pygg is a type of orange clay , once widely used for making pottery in the form of jars, cookware and other household items because it was economical.
A piggy bank was originally a "pygg jar". Later, the word "pygg" became less common, and its sound was reinterpreted as "pig"; only then did piggy banks actually begin to be made in the shape of a pig .
The original pronunciation of "pygg" was probably closer to "pug", but over time the pronunciation changed due to the Great Vowel Shift and became a homonym of "pig".

I started teaching my son (now 19) about money and how to save when he was very young. Today he faithfully saves or invests a percentage of each of his payroll checks. He is doing this while working part-time while being a full time college student. My contention is that if you really want your children to be free - free of debt - free of burdensome financial obligations when they are adult - free to pursue their dreams - then now is the time to instill in them the lost art and practice of saving!
