Music lessons were never as much fun as in Disney's hit TV movie. 'High School Musical' is Disney's most successful TV movie ever, with the album being the first all-original TV soundtrack to ever top America's Billboard charts.
The blend of sit-rom-com and putting-on-a-show conventions stars Zac Effron as basketball player Troy and Vanessa Anne Hudgens as geeky heroine Gabriella. They're accomplished singers, leading a lively score penned by a whole team of writers. Numbers are youthfully energetic, nodding towards 'Grease' and 'West Side Story', but infused with modern pop production sheen and a gloss of power-ballad and rap styles.
'Get'cha Head in the Game' is innovatively built around a bouncing basketball beat, and is reprised on the album as full-on rap by B5. There's an infectious Latin groove to 'Bop to the Top' while 'Start of Something New' is a vibrant contemporary Disney pop duet. Appropriately given the plot, the disc ends with karaoke versions of 'Start of Something New' and uplifting anthem 'Breaking Free'.
