The bald eagle is the national bird of the United States; it is the only eagle unique to North America. At one time, the word "bald" meant "white," not hairless. Bald eagles can be found throughout most of North America. They range from Alaska and Canada to northern Mexico.

Having the great pleasure of witnessing these great birds my self as they nest, hunt and fish, has let me realize just how magnificent they truly are. Their grace and beauty is truly something to behold as I have tried to capture in this drawing.

About half of the world's 70,000 bald eagles live in Alaska. Combined with British Columbia's population of about 20,000, the northwest coast of North America is by far their greatest stronghold for bald eagles. They flourish here in part because of the salmon. Dead or dying fish are an important food source for all bald eagles.

The bald eagle is found across the entire continent. The largest numbers of bald eagles are in the Northwest, especially in Alaska. It was once thought that there were two species of bald eagles the "northern" bald eagle being slightly larger than the "southern" bald eagle. Resent studies have shown that "northern" bald eagles fly into the southern states and Mexico, and the "southern" bald eagles fly north into Canada. Because of these finding, this designation of bald eagles has been discontinued in recent documentation.

The bald eagle was officially declared an endangered species in 1967 in all areas of the United States south of the 40th parallel, under a law that preceded the Endangered Species Act of 1973.

Until 1995, the bald eagle was listed as endangered under the Endangered Species Act in 43 of the 48 lower states; it was also listed as threatened in Wisconsin, Minnesota, Michigan, Washington and Oregon. In July of 1995, the US Fish and Wildlife Service upgraded the status of bald eagles in the lower 48 states to "threatened."

The American bald eagle was taken off the Endangered Species List on June 28, 2007 by the Interior Department. The bald eagle will still be protected by the Migratory Bird Treaty Act and the Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act. The Bald Eagle Protection Act prohibits the take, transport, sale, barter, trade, import and export, and possession of eagles, making it illegal for anyone to collect eagles and eagle parts, nests, or eggs without a permit.

I try to capture and characterize a great deal more than is openly evident in appearance for every individual, pet, animal or any type of object; and, it is my goal to represent that individualism in each sketch.

I like to draw creating pleasing contrasts in charcoal tone and shading to bring out detail characteristic depths as I see and feel them. Each charcoal drawing is a "one-of-a-kind", original sketch for your unique display; or providing an exceptional gift for that very special person. I draw with charcoal as it allows me to achieve a very specific and desired effect that renders detail characteristics and style of a subject's features with a softer finish and unique expression.

Materials Used:
Charcoal, charcoal pencils, graphite pencils, acid free sketch paper, non smudge protective fixative spray, black matte
