Victorian Trade Card - Arbuckle Brothers Coffee Company - "OF PISCATORIAL INTEREST" (#63)
SERIES: Satire
This is one of 100 cards featuring humorous cartoons and advertising the "Ariosa" brand of coffee that Arbuckles' issued in the late 1880s. All the illustrations were originally published in either Puck, Judge, or Texas Siftings, three of the more popular satirical periodicals of the day. Most typically aimed their derision at blacks, country "rubes", the Irish, or the fundamentally clueless. This particular card was based on an 1888 Texas Siftings cartoon drawn by D. McCarthy and features a waiter in a fancy restaurant creatively trying to extricate himself from an exaggerated claim he's just made to a diner.
The back carries Arbuckles' familiar "Four Points" sales pitch.
SIZE: 3" x 5"
DATE: Undated (but probably 1888 or 1889)
LITHOGRAPHER: Not identified
CONDITION: Very good to fine, I'd say. The card is only lightly soiled with slightly worn edges and corners. There's a small diagonal crease across the upper right corner and a small brown spot on the tablecloth. (Please see scans.)
MULTIPLE ITEM SHIPPING DISCOUNT: I will ship up to 4 cards for the single base shipping charge shown. For purchases of more than 4 cards, the shipping charge will increase by just a small increment for every 4 additional cards.

OF PISCATORIAL INTEREST
CUSTOMER (in restaurant)--"What kind of fish have
you got, waiter?"
WAITER--"All kinds, everything, can give you what
you like."
"Well, bring me some fried whale."
"Er--I'm very sorry about the whales, Mister, they're
jest out. The dealer disappointed us this morning an'
only sent two."
