SERIES: Satire

This is one of 100 cards featuring humorous cartoons and advertising the "Ariosa" brand of coffee that Arbuckles' issued in the late 1880s. All the illustrations were originally published in either Puck, Judge, or Texas Siftings, three of the more popular satirical periodicals of the day. Most typically aimed their derision at blacks, country "rubes", the Irish, or idle schemers. This particular card was based on an 1888 Texas Siftings cartoon drawn by Syd B. Griffin and features a smart-aleck kid about to testify in court.

The back shows the Arbuckles' factory buildings, dock, railroad cars, and a ship.

DATE: Undated (but probably 1888 or 1889)

LITHOGRAPHER: Not identified

CONDITION: Fair to good, I'd say. The card is a bit soiled and apparently was somewhat roughly removed from a scrapbook. It's slightly rippled and the back has several small patches of surface paper loss (Please see scans.)
