As I am told, a Critter Stick is a stick of special characteristics & attributes.
Very Strong- so you can use it as a lever to pry stuff and a snapping turtle can't break it
Fairly lightweight- so lugging it around won't wear you out
A bit of flexibility- so it won't break easily and add's a bit of kick (when used as a deterrent)
Length is important-usually between 24 and 36 inches
Not too long (depends on the user)-so you can easily swing it in a chicken coop without getting hung-up
Not too short (depends on the user)- so you can keep a mad dog or other critter such as a snake at bay without having to get in it's face
Long enough to use as a cane in the event you get hurt.
Not too pretty- so nobody will steal it
Not too ugly- so the wife won't throw it in the woodstove
Ugly enough to convince a contrary visitor to think twice about becoming belligerent
About the size of a broom handle- so you can keep a good grip and anyone in the family can use it when needed.
Stained, painted, treated, or waxed- so it won't get ruined if you forget and leave it out in the rain
This critter stick is kinda cool. I have one I keep above the door and it always gets people's attention and comments; everyone has to take it down and handle it. I've also taken it along when a possum has invaded the chicken pen, as well as, with me for the long walk to the mailbox just in case I run into a wild animal (no problems so far) or need to move a snake (seems like they love hanging out at the base of my mailbox).
For sure, It WILL be a conversation piece, and something that very people will have, and most will have no idea what it is until you tell them.
It has a cherry finish (I think it's cherry) and I think it is made of blackjack wood (according to the husband). He waxed or oiled it (did something to clean it up- looks much better than it did when I got it).
This one has knot's, a slight curve, and looks like "Pa" might have had to rescue it from the stove (has a dark spot on one side).
It measure's right at 31 inches long
It is very textured with the natural woodgrain
The handle end looks like it might have been in a fire or has just been carried around a lot.
The husband say's that people used to put stuff like this in the fire and char them to harden the wood and season against insects
I have no idea how old this ugly stick is.
I give a 100% ironclad guarantee that this genuine "Ugly Stick" is a one of a kind, and you will NEVER find an exact replica of this authentic piece.
If you want, I can make up a certificate of authenticity to put some weight behind it when showing off (for an extra $0.50).
Would make a perfect gift for that relative or friend who has everything...they probably won't have one of these!
