Bamboo only flowers and makes seed on rare ocassions. In some cases it may be 100 years or more between flowerings.
This is the largest and the handsomest of the running bamboos. Native to China /Japan. The stems have many uses in the Orient and in Japan this species is the major source of edible bamboo shoots. . In warmer regions it can reach 70' and have a diameter of more than 15". In cooler zones it will be shorter and it can be be container grown.

Soak seeds for 24 hours in luke warm water. Mix the potting soil with 1/2 of red clay. Sow 1/4 inch deep a nd keep temperature at 70-80 degrees, Germination occurs between 4-8 weeks. The mortality rate of seedlings is high, so plant some more than you will need.
