Highly detailed plate by Wedgwood in1959 to commemorate the opening of the St. Lawrence Seaway by H.M. Queen Elizabeth II and H.R.H. the Duke of Edinburgh on board the royal Yacht Brittania in June 1959. It is 10 ¼” in diameter. Interestingly enough it’s the 50th anniversary in 2009!
The 3 backstamps read:
#1 – Wedgwood Bicentenary 1759 – 1959
#2 – Wedgwood & Barlaston of Etruria Made in England
#3 – Engraved by the Wedgwood Studios.
It is also impressed with “Wedgwood 2 R 59”. I believe the 2 R 59 would be the 2nd month of 1959.
The coloring is black pictures on cream-colored background. In fact, the plates made at the time by Wedgwood were called “creamware.”
No chips, cracks or crazing. Excellent condition.
