ABOUT THE MOVIE: This is a classic musical romance. Fred Astaire is a 1912 song and dance man, and he is a dapper, happy fellow enjoying along Fifth Avenue for gifts for his lady dance partner, played by Ann Miller. But, once he arrives at her apartment with all his purchases, he finds she has decided to leave the act and has signed a contract elsewhere. Fred leaves unhappily, and their mutual friend, Peter Lawford, goes out to find him. He finds Fred engaged in conversation with the philosophical bartender in a club. Fred realizes he can make someone else into a star, just as he did with Ann. He approaches the stage where a chorus line of girls are hoofing out a number. He sets his eyes on one of them, who turns out to be Judy Garland, aka Hannah. He gives her his card and tells her to report the next morning for a tryout. She arrives late and cannot tell her right foot from her left, but does show some talent. Eventually, the two work out a routine and she now becomes his new dance partner. Her dream goal is to walk down the avenue in the Easter Parade and get as much attention as has Ann Miller. Meanwhile, his first partner Ann has found fame and fortune as a performer and has formed feelings for Peter Lawford. One day it is raining and Peter bumps into Judy Garland as she is standing in a doorway. He does not know who she is or that she knows Fred. He falls in love with her, but she has by now fallen for Fred. I won't tell you anymore so as not to spoil the ending. The story line is thin, but the music is WOW!!!! Fred dances, Judy sings. Irving Berlin did the music. Need I say more? Judy could really belt out a song, and her dancing wasn't bad, either. As for Fred, there is no equal. The man was MR. RHYTHM, fluent in ballroom, tap, jazz moves, and just about any form of dance. This was Judy and Fred's only movie together, and that is a shame because they worked so beautifully together. My favorite number in the movie is A COUPLE OF SWELLS, where Fred and Judy perform as strolling tramps. It is fantastic. Other numbers are Fred's STEPPIN OUT WITH MY BABY and Ann Miller's SHAKIN THE BLUES AWAY.
The costumes are also terrific. This is a classic you won't want to miss.
