This is a really glitzy high quality set from the fabulous fifties, true retro Americana at its very finest. This set originates from the early nineteen fifties, and is at least half a century old.
It comprises ribbons of high quality rhinestones, all prong set by hand, with a huge oval emerald stone set in the centre of the bracelet and the choker length necklace, held tightly in place with ‘dog tooth’ prongs.
The necklace measures approx. 14”/36cms and is designed as a ‘choker’ length, to sit tightly on the throat. It is extremely unusual because of the domed centre to the necklace. The central stone is ¾” long, and surrounded by the same size clear rhinestones, which seem as good now as the day it was made. This is obviously from a quality manufacturer. There is a metal hook, which may be fastened anywhere along the row of single rhinestones thus making it fit almost anyone's neck. Heavily plated with platinums younger sister, rhodium, this set looks as though it was very little worn.
At approx 7” long, this bracelet is designed also to be a snug fit, in order to keep the central stone on the top of your wrist. The foldover clasp snaps shut nice and securely.
The ear clips have the same size emerald stone as the necklace and bracelet. They each have a sturdy clip which works well.
This set is a perfect example of the early fifties, when the deprivations of the second world war were fading, and new inventions and innovations were being introduced. Soda fountains and jukeboxes, Barbie andhigh school hops are all from this fabulous era.
Music was being created (and presented) as never before and Elvis gyrated his way into our hearts and on the newly invented television.
Many parents of the fifties were traditional - mom stayed home and baked, dad went to work. These were the parents of the generation known today as the Baby Boomers and there are more than 70 million of them in the USA alone.
The fabulous fifties was a time of great optimism and this was reflected in fashion, accessories and even motor cars – remember those now classic ‘wings’ developed by Chevrolet ?
In the fifties, style was very important for young people. They were either ‘mod’ (wearing suits on a motor scooter) or a ‘rocker’ (in leather jacket on a motorbike).
