Ultra Mohair: Looks like real baby hair!
This is what the very best mohair looks like. It has an incredible glow with soft curls and vibrant color. It costs the most but it really makes a difference in the look of your reborn baby.
What’s the secret to getting such incredibly gorgeous mohair from the goat? Well, it has a lot to do with the health of the goat and what fleece you buy.
Why is it so baby hair fine?
Mohair is shorn from the goat twice a year spring and fall. Mohair ranges from very fine to coarse. Young goats produce the finest fiber from their 1st clip (fall shearing.) These fleeces are very fine and flyaway making it difficult to handle or root. The 2nd clip (spring shearing) is when the kids start to produce quality fiber.
The 3rd and 4th clip is still soft and fine, but much easier to handle...making it the most popular fleece used for rooting. Fine Adult mohair is normally from a 5th and 6th shearing. These fleeces are very similar to the 3rd and 4th shearing... still beautifully soft and fine.
Why is it so soft?
This premium baby-hair-like mohair comes only from a few select farms in the United States and is chosen specifically for doll makers. When we find such incredible mohair we buy the entire fleece from that shearing. We do not mix fleeces together, because each fleece has it's own characteristics. The raw mohair is washed several times, rinsed and then sorted to find only the best locks. Then its hand dyed using our own secret blend of custom dyes in 1 oz batches. Now the mohair is again washed, rinsed, conditioned, combed, and then conditioned and combed again. Then we let it air dry. You will be amazed at how soft and fine the mohair is.
Ultra comes ready to root!
Great care is taken making sure that the locks of mohair run in the same direction. This way you can root from the cut end leaving the uncut end to look incredibly natural on your reborn baby.
