Has God Been Silenced?
by Sidney & Shirley Robbins
Whether you are a Christian, a Jew, a non-believer, or of any other faith - the indisputable fact is that we are all facing a crisis across the globe; indeed we are all in serious trouble.
We can no longer shut our eyes to the urgent challenges facing humanity; whether it is climate change, population explosion, armed conflicts, slavery, sex perversion, crime, or drugs terrorism - the list is endless. This concerns the 6 billion people on the globe, and in order to solve these crises we have to reach billions of people. But around most of these crises we face a Deafening Silence; and this is most evident among, the so-called conscience of society'; those guardians of our moral and spiritual wellbeing - that is, the Churches and the clergy.
In the following very short list we ask the question: where were the churches then - and where are they now?
- when slavery, and human trafficking is here on our streets, and millions are victims of sex-slavery
- when nuns were raped, missionaries and children were butchered
- when two Viscounts with civilian passengers were shot down by Nkomo’s ZAPU forces in Rhodesia (Zimbabwe)
- when hundreds of thousands are suffering in the crisis in Darfur and elsewhere
- when children are the sex-victims of perverts and pimps in our towns and cities
This book exposes the ignorance, the naiveté and hypocrisy prevalent in many Churches. Can Christianity survive this deafening silence on matters that affect our lives, and the lives of many who are victims of barbarity and perversion? Is it not time that both the clergy and the laity awoke to the dangers facing Christianity? Or have they made Christianity irrelevant? This is a thought-provoking book and we hope it will encourage both debate and action.
A summary of the contents:
The Growth of Christianity - What is the State of the Church today?
The Day the World was Silent - Do any of you remember the shooting down of the two Rhodesian Viscounts by Joshua Nkomo’s Zipra forces in 1978? There followed a deafening silence! The world was silent. The politicians were silent. The world Churches were silent. Most of the churches in Rhodesia were silent. The lone voice was that of the Anglican Dean of Salisbury Cathedral, John da Costa in his famous sermon The Deafening Silence which is printed in full in this book. It ends with: I have nothing but amazement at the silence of so many of the political leaders of the world. I have nothing but sadness that our churches have failed so badly to practise what we preach. May God forgive us all, and may he bring all those who died so suddenly and unprepared into the light of His glorious presence.
Does nothing rile the Church these days? How do the guardians of Christianity respond to Jesus being seduced by Judas on stage, or Biblical figures being branded as pimps? Canongate have published new versions of three Books of the Old Testament, in which prophets are branded as ‘cheats and pimps’, and have forewords written by well-known artists and writers. Abraham and Isaac are called ‘polygamous nomads who get cattle or revenge by prostituting their wives or cheating foreigners or relatives?
The play depicts Jesus Christ and his followers as a group of homosexuals.
He is seduced by Judas Iscariot, but is later crucified as ‘king of the queers’. It caused an outcry among Christians when it was staged during the Edinburgh Fringe festival during the summer.
Church and Politics - The Obsession with Politics. A compelling case can be made that Christians ought to care about politics precisely because political acts can have profound human consequences.
But the principal threat Christians now face is not disengagement from politics but absorption by it.
Christians need to resist a creeping political idolatry.’
‘You are priests, not social or political leaders. Let us not be under the illusion that we are serving the Gospel through an exaggerated interest in the wide field of temporal problems.’ Pope John Paul II
Homosexuality. While homosexuality confines itself to relationships between individual partners, we may be tempted to dismiss it as their personal concern. But the debate over homosexual marriage has taken on a wider significance, and predominant stereotypes have developed with two distinct and opposing sides.
The Plight of Christians in Africa and the causes of Africa’s Plight.
Slavery in Africa - It has developed into an epidemic and out of control and sex slavery linked to sex tourism
Genocide - This has never stopped and fighting, rape other atrocities are.
Corruption - This is endemic and one of the major causes of Africa's plight.
Debt Burden which can never be repaid.
HIV/AIDS together with TB and Malaria is raging like a run away fire.
The Drug Epidemic - is increasing in prevalence and is now found to be prevalent in junior schools.
Until the world realizes that the churches need to be revitalized, and play a constructive role, Western Civilisation is going to remain in a state of decline.
