Here is an antique Sterling Locket necklace. The front holds a hand-chased Forget-Me-Not floral design. It is a bit over an inch long, and in wonderful condition.
The back is plain and in very good condition with the exception of a few minute dings (see photos) which is to be expected on jewelry a hundred or so years old.
The Locket comes with a lovely old 18" cable link chain in super condition and with great patina. On a larger link connected to the spring ring closure are the marks: SO (the maker whom I can't identify) & STG (sterling abbrev.). On the spring ring there is a 925.
Now to the inner locket:
First of all, it is also marked SO STG on the left half which most certainly connects the chain to the locket. That was an exciting discovery! I took photos with a magnifying glass held over the marks so you may view them. Secondly, it is rough & unfinished within and this has puzzled me. I think perhaps it may have been used to hold hair, though it will certainly accommodate 2 photos which would cover most of the area indeed.
Overall, this lovely locket is very desireable and no telling how old it is! It may be a sentimental piece that was used to carry a locket of hair or some momento of a loved one. Furthermore, it may pre-date photography and consequently never intended to hold photos. My guess is that it was made in the early 1800s, but one thing's for sure, you will simply adore it!!!
*Typical age-wear. It is VERY RARE for vintage/antique jewelry to entirely escape the tolls of time. :(
