These are lovely Saphiret rhinestone clip earrings from the 1950s with lilac & pink hues! Saphiret stones are quite desirable and not commonly found.
Each has 9 glass, prong-set marquise cabachons & 1 large lilac chaton non-saphiret rhinestone. Note the artistic touch of openwork leaves surrounding the chaton. The backside has gorgeous goldtone filigree work.
One small stone is a replacement as you will see in the photos (left earring) and other than that, these are in very good condition, especially for antiques. These are truly a work of art and the VERY Collectible Saphiret stones are commanding high prices in today's market!!!
A note about Saphiret Glass~
Saphiret glass is made by adding a small quantity of gold to sapphire colored glass. The resulting glass reflects a soft mocha color with blue and pink undertones. In the second half of the 19th century, there are references to saphiret glass which fetched higher prices than gold or rubies. It can be found in some of the finest Art Nouveau jewelry.
The well-known author of the Collecting Costume Jewelry books, Julia C. Carroll, states, "All jewelry, marked or unmarked, with saphiret glass is highly collectible."
*Typical age-wear noticeable only upon CLOSE inspection. It is VERY RARE for vintage/antique jewelry to entirely escape the tolls of time. :(
