The First Edition has this wonderful first edition book for sale, Mark Twain Tom Sawyer Abroad. This scarce old Mark Twain first edition book was published in 1894 by Chatto and Windus. This book conforms to the description in the authoritative bibliography, Merle Johnson A Bibliography of the Work of Mark Twain Samuel Langhorne Clemens (1910).
The original publisher’s pictorial boards features to the front board a wonderful Dan Beard illustration of Tom Sawyer having an adventure in what appears to be a flying airship, dangling from a rope ladder and being chased by a lion. The illustration and title are printed in black as required. The spine also features a Dan Beard illustration of Tom Sawyer being chased by a lion. The spine’s illustration is in black and the title in gilt, as required. The back board features the Chatto and Windus monogram to the centre.
The boards are in Good condition with dust marks; corner and edge knocks; a tear to the spine that has been repaired; darkening to the spine; slight shelf lean; and slight wear to the hinges of the front and back boards (not serious, from age, and only mentioned for completeness).
There are 208 numbered pages plus a large 32 page catalogue to the end of the book. The book has plain white endpapers as called for; a Half Title Page; an advertisement for Mark Twain’s Works to the reverse of the Title Page; a tissue guard between the Frontispiece and the Title Page; and two pages for the List of Illustrations. This book is profusely illustrated throughout with one-page and smaller black and white illustrations by Dan Beard.
The pages are thick and in overall Very Good condition with small writing in pencil to the blank page opposite the Half Title Page, and to the Half Title Page; browning to the tissue guard; light age toning to the edges of the pages; and a small retailer’s label applied to the rear pastedown.
According to Johnson this UK first edition of Tom Sawyer Abroad “…was announced by Chatto & Windus for April 16, 1894. I can find no confirmation for the actual issue, but if the publishers kept their word the book appeared two days before the filing of an American copy in Washington.”
This is a wonderful example of this old Mark Twain book that will make an important addition to any old Mark Twain book collection, old children’s illustrated book collectors, or any collection of old fiction books.
