The Republic of Hungary, was Austrian, until 1918. The Forint's name comes from the city of Florence, Italy, where golden money was minted from 1252 under the name fiorino d'oro. Between 1857 and 1892, the Forint was the name used in Hungarian for the currency of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The Forint was reintroduced on 1 August 1946, after the 1945-1946 hyperinflation of the Pengo.
