IEC type DOL motor starters are made up of primarly two parts. A contactor and overload device. Both devices have maximum ratings and the overload has maximum and minimum ratings. You should choose a motor starter that fits both criteria.

Contactor contact ratings (Max):

1 PH @ 240VAC = 3 HP or 17 Amps

3 PH @ 200VAC = 7.5 HP or 25.3 Amps

3 PH @ 240VAC = 7.5 HP or 22 Amps

3 PH @ 480VAC = 10 HP or 14 Amps

3 PH @ 600VAC = 10 HP or 11 Amps

Overload rating is 12 - 18 Amps.

Control Voltage is 120 VAC and is pre-wired. The control voltage is the Voltage used to magnetically engage the starter. It is very common to use a 120V or 240V control Voltage even while running a machine on 480V.

One or several overloads may be available for this starter. Your equipment full load Amp rating should fall within the overload settings to be properly protected.

How to choose the right motor starter:

-Determine your machine load. That can be HP or KW or KVA.

-Know your power source. Example, 230 single phase or 230 three phase or 460 three phase etc…

-Understand the difference between control voltage and line/load voltage. Control voltage is the voltage used to activate the motor starter. Line/load voltage is the voltage needed to run your equipment.

-All motor starters will have maximum ratings. This is shown in various ways as Max HP or Max Amps at a given voltage. Your equipment load should not exceed these values. A motor starter can be rated at say 20 HP at 460 Volts but only 10 HP at 230 Volts. That is because the KW (Kilowatts) is basically the same.

-The magnetic contactor can be rated much larger than the load and it is sometimes a good idea to do so… Most contactors can be fitted with various size overloads (sometimes called overload relays) provided the rating does not exceed the contactor ratings. Choose the overload to match your load.

Example, your load is a table saw.

It has a 5 HP, 3 phase motor.

Your line/load voltage is nominal 230 VAC 3 phase.

Your motor FLA (Full Load Amps) is 14 Amps.

That is a motor starter with a size 25 or 25 Amp contactor, with an overload of 13-18 Amps. For the simplest installation we would recommend the control be 230 Volts.
