TYPE OF PEN: Fountain Screw-On Cap

TYPE OF INK: Black

DETAILS: This pen was made with extra care since a lot of my money and time went into this. The wood is stabilized snakewood which means its more expensive than the already expensive snakewood. The pen is plated with rhodium, a very rare element from earth, and compliments the wood making this pen gorgeous.

EXTRA INFO: Stabilized woods have been infused with monomers and acrylics. Advantages of stabilized woods are minimized or eliminated like shrinking, cracking, expanding, and warping. Other benefits of stabilized wood include stable moisture, oil impervious, and no raised grains.

PROCESS: To start the pen off, I drilled the stabilized snakewood with a 10.5mm and 12.5mm drill bit. Directly after, I glued the wood to brass tubing with CA Glue (Cyanoacrylate or "Super Glue") and then squared the ends of the wood to the brass tubing to make the pen the correct size. I then put the wood on my JET lathe and started turning. I used Robert Sorby HSS (High-Speed Steel) Turning tools which made very smooth cuts. I turned the wood into its figure and then sanded it up to 1500 grit sandpaper. I used #0000 steel wool to remove any embedded dust with in the wood, so it wouldn't be trapped in the finishing process. To finish, I put a coat of CA glue and then slightly sanded it with 1500 grit sandpaper. I did this process three times and then moved on with the actual finish. Coating wood with CA Glue gives the wood protection and a rich color. When slightly sanded down, it covers little cracks that would usually be irritating when held and makes the wood extra smooth. The actual finish I used was HUT Crystal Coat. The finish gives a crystal shine when put on several times. After everything was dried and done, I took it off the lathe and pressed all the pen parts together. The pen was finished.
