Vintage Signed Original Thai Temple Rubbing Here is a beautiful piece of art from Thailand. It's an original temple rubbing in colors primarily red and yellow. It is signed by the artist. Temple rubbings were stopped by the Thai government in the 1980s / 1990s, so many items made available for sale today are reproduction copies.This is an original, done on rice paper. It's not dated, but is estimated to be from the 1960s / early 1970s. It was acquired from a collector who had a lot of really nice Asian art.It's housed in a simple, black, bamboo style frame with glass. It measures 19 3/4" x 12" and is ready to hang. Here is a description of the history and art of Temple rubbings found on the Worthpoint site:"The Temple rubbings are from the various Temples in and around Bangkok, Thailand. They were hand rubbed by skilled artisans in the early 1960's. Quality rice paper was placed over the intricate designs carved on the stone temple walls. The surface was then rubbed with colored chalk inks producing an exact likeness of the wall carving. Over the years, the Thai Government became aware that this rubbing process was causing surface erosion which was permanently damaging the treasured temple wall carvings. In 1995 they banned the process and restricted exportation of all temple rubbings made by this direct rubbing technique."
