Welcome! Presenting an impressionist watercolor seascape print of a painting by listed Naples, Florida artist William (known as Bill) Henry, signed in the plate on the lower left and dated 1946. The image is that of a couple of fisherman with their sailboat and dinghy, preparing to set sail in calm, shallow water. One fisherman hoists the jib, while the other stands in the water tethered to the dinghy, preparing the gear. The foreground features a wavering reflection of the scene in the water. This has been printed on heavy, old beige watercolor paper It measures 24 inches wide by about 20 inches long. A very helpful art historian who is familiar with the work has given me the following information: "After Henry did a watercolor that he thought would sell, he had prints made. I probably have about 10 of them. I wrote a book on the man that Henry hired to do his printmaking, his name was Buell Whitehead, from Ft. Myers, Whitehead was also a great artist, the print you have is in my book, It was titled Bahama Schooner and also Bahama Sloop, it really is a beautiful print." A picture of the artwork and other works by Henry is in a book called "Buell Whitehead, A True Southern Treasure", a dear friend of William Henry.
This print was found in an old white and gilt painted wooden frame with black velvet matting sewn around the inner wooden channel and glass, with cardboard backing, old nails and brown paper bag finishing paper on the back. It has been unframed and the back of the paper has toning and old faint marks from the corrugation of the cardboard backing. The glass was chipped at one edge and has been disposed of, as has the brown paper bag material. The old frame is still available, and I can email photographs if there is an interest. It would be shipped at additional cost. The original cardboard backing will come with. It appears that the paper was trimmed to fit the frame, since the painted word "Copyright" is cut off at the lower right. There is also a small reddish brown mark in the center of the upper edge. There may also be variations in the color of the print due to age and exposure to light, and some minor shallow rippling to the paper. But overall this print is intact as it is and in good condition. Special arrangements can be made for local pick up by Florida residents.
William Henry is listed with biographical and auction information at AskArt and other sources. The printmaker, Buell Whitehead, is a fine artist and craftsman as well.
