Since this is new, old stock, it will probably need a fresh, new battery.

Worth the money
I bought the polar A5 in Jan 2002. I did a fair amount of research before I made the purchase. I was looking for a reliable heart beat monitor that had the basic functions, not all the advanced pc interface and training program stuff. The real entry level models like the polar a3 or some of the $50 models always miss out on something. The polar A5 came with a good mix of functions and a strong brand name so I decided to give it try.
I use the polar when running (building up for the half marathon) and when i go moutainbiking. I never for a single moment regretted the purchase. Working out became more fun and the polar hasn't let me down in any sense so far, despite the daily use now for over 6 months.
What I like about it?
- the backlight. When working out after sunset (or even close to it) a watch without it is useless. Very nice feature is that when you move the watch close enough to the chest belt when running, the watch ligths up. No messing with those little buttons.
- overall quality. It's everywhere: the package, the watch itself, the chest belt.
- the easy operations. Basically one button only. But it takes you an hour on the coach to figure that out and a few lost work out files in the beginning.
- the looks. Although it is a big to ware it as a regular watch (but you definitely could), it is still one of the best looking HB monitors out there.
