Up for sale is a nice vintage children's school reader published by Scott, Foresman and Company, Copyright 1949. It is an adapted version of Robert Louis Stevenson's Treasure Island. Adapted by Gertrude Moderow, Josephine Mitchell and Ernest C. Noyes. Illustrated by Alexander Key and Ernie King.
At the back of the book in the "To The Teacher" it states that this book was done to make it attractive and understanding to the many "unwilling" readers of junior and senior high school age who cannot enjoy reading Stevenson's original. They have basically simplified the vocabulary and made the words more modern than when it was originally written to make it easier to follow, while making every effort to preserve the interest, plot, and style of the original.
Book has 342 pages. Book is in very good condition for its age. There is a small name written inside, but no other writing or school stamps. Pages in good shape, not a bunch of writing and scribbling on pages like you so often find with these kind of books. No torn or missing pages. Cover in good condition.
These vintage School Readers are getting harder to find. You can find all kinds of the newly published ones but not the old originals.
Great old book for your collection.
