1861 U.S. GENERAL LAND OFFICE PATENT, PAT
Up for sale is this unique old document referred to as a "Copy of Patent." It is a legal length document which I have scanned in two sections. The document is issued by The United States of America, dated the 1st of July, 1861, and appears to be conveying land located in Carroll County, Arkansas, under Act of Congress of the 24th of April, 1820, entitled "An act making further provision for the sale of the Public Lands." At the bottom of the document it states "In Testimony Whereof, I, Abraham Lincoln, PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, have caused these Letters to be made PATENT, and the SEAL of the GENERAL LAND OFFICE to be hereunto affixed." It further states "BY THE PRESIDENT: Abraham Lincoln (signature) by W. O Stoddard (signature), Secretary." From copies of autographs of Abraham Lincoln that I have seen, I do not believe this is his signature, but possibly that of Mr. Stoddard. Affixed to the document is the raised seal of the United States General Land Office and a statement certifying that the document is a true copy of the patent record. This statement is dated Jan. 6, 1928. This is a wonderful old document and in good shape for its age.
