Exceptional work is done by the Asians in small detail, which is what makes their collectibles so appealing. This lacquer tray, which measures 9.25 x 13.50", was created from natural lacquer, laid in many layers over a cloth and wood base. Into that lacquer was inserted natural mother of pearl, cut and shaped and detailed, to tell a story as well as be decorative. This beautiful tray and its garden scene was created about 85-100 years ago. There is minimal damage to one upper corner of the tray and a minor loss to another corner on the reverse side. The lacquer shows its true red color at points approaching the MOP in places. Lacquer darkens as it ages. There is no loss to the MOP inserts. On the reverse side, the tray shows two definite lengthwise stress "cracks" in the lacquer, which do not affect the integrity of the tray. The tray is weighty for its size. ... [full description] |
