Introduction:
The purpose of this lab was to determine the pH values of different concentrations of acids, bases, and salts. By finding the pH value, the acid-base dissociation, along with the degree of ionization could be found.
The pH values in this lab were determined by using indicators. Indicators determine the pH by changing the color of the solutions. Five different indicators were used in this experiment: thymol blue, methyl orange, methyl red, bromethymol blue, and alizarin blue.
The pH of an acid or base can be found by using the equation
pH = -log[H3O+].
