SCARLET STREET (1945) Directed by Fritz Lang
CAST: Edward G. Robinson, Joan Bennett, Dan Duryea, Margaret Lindsay, Rosalind Ivan, Jess Barker.
Scarlet Street is a bleak film in which an ordinary man succumbs first to vice and then to murder. Chris Cross (Edward G. Robinson) is a lonely man married to a nagging wife. Painting is the only thing that brings him joy.
Chris falls in love with a prostitute, Kitty (Joan Bennett) who, believing him to be a famous painter, begins milking him for money with the encouragement of her abusive boyfriend Johnny (Dan Duryea). Chris steals money from his wife to set Kitty up in a lavish apartment where he can also go to paint. In that apartment, happy for the first time in his life, Cross paints Kitty's picture. Johnny then pretends that Kitty painted the portrait, which has won great critical acclaim. Chris continues to paint masterpieces which Johnny sells under Kitty's name - with disastrous and ironic results.
