Handmade Basket Embera Rainforest Darien Panama
Tightly stitched coil beige palm fiber basket with dark brown and orange jaguar skulls and geometric designs made by the Wounaan Indians of Darien, Panama.
Wounaan baskets are traditionally made from bundled fibers of the Nahuala palm, which forms the coil. The coil is stitched together with fine, thread-like strands of sun-bleached chunga palm filaments. Collectors consider Wounaan baskets to be technically among the finest in the world. Until recently these baskets were plain, functional, quotidian objects. It was not until late in the 20th century, at the urging of visitors, that the Wounaan adapted and refined their craft into a modern art form with decorative motifs for sale to galleries and collectors worldwide. Now a basket made by a master craftswoman may take a year or more to complete.

Material: Sun-bleached “chunga,” palm filaments and vegetable dyes.
