Large Red Macaw Embera Tribe Mask Rainforest Darien Panama
The natural world of the Embera Waunam Indians of the Darien rain forest in Panama comes alive in these intricately woven masks.
Shamans use these traditional masks healing rituals to establish connections with animal spirits and before hunts to ensure good luck.
Made of young Nahuala palm fiber dyed with jungle plant dyes.
The young Nahuala palm is harvested and the inner fiber of the palm is used as weaving materials. After the fibers have been dried, they are ready to be dyed with the jungle plants that grow in their tropical forest. By extracting their dyes from rainforest plants, bark, leaves and fruits, they achieve a variety of bold and bright natural colors.
Macaws are native to Central America’s rainforests, and a very recurrent motif depicted by the Embera tribe. Their skill in basketry is used to faithfully recreate the tropical birds and animals of their rain forest environment.
