Pigeon Blood Agate! is a form of translucent, reddish-orange to red gem-quality agate, a very early Cretaceous quartz. It is a member of the carnelian family, with a hardness of 6.5 to 7.0. Agates are named according to their appearance, some pigeon blood agates are clear with a few bright red spots, while others are translucent with many red inclusions. The red color is due the heavy iron content.
