For the crowd that liked their mainstream-y comics and more alternative fare to comingle, Slam Bang was the small press comics anthology of the '80s. Although recently revived, this issue is from the original run.
Highlights of this issue:
a beautiful page by Chris Ware (Acme Novelty Library) that features his little "potato man" and was apparently inspired by Golden Age Superman comics
Ware also contributes a daily-format strip called "The Modern Family" inspired by George Herriman
"Escape to Candyland", a really great two-pager by David Miller (Bob Goblin, Funny Organs)
plus tons more good stuff by Wayno, John Howard, John MacLeod, Brad Foster, Jim Siergey, Matt Feazell, Bill Fitts, Mike Urban, Dan Burke, Robert Guthrie, Michael Cain, Flint (Cary) Baker, Chuck Haspel, Barry Brandon and others
Over the course of 33 issues, Slam Bang presented the work of Mary Fleener, Jeff Gaither, Hilary Barta, Roger Langridge, Donna Barr, Mark Martin, Colin Upton, John Howard, Edward Bolman, Tom Hart, Roy Tompkins, Steve Woron, Brad Foster and many, many others.
