About the Statue from the Sotheby's SALE 7624 INDIAN AND SOUTHEAST ASIAN ART MARCH 20,2001 PAGE 106 The important Tibetan Sculpture depicts the histrocial Buddha Shakyamuni as he calls the earth to bear wintness to his right to enlightenment, an event that is said to have transpired in the 6th-5th century. B:C:E at Bodh Gaya in Bihar, eastern India. Superbly finished and gilded, the image is reminiscent of Nepalese sculpture of the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, as seen in a Buddha in the Norton Simon Mueseum. This statue, however, shows signs of having been consecrated in the Tibetan manner, as indicated by the traced of gold paint on the face, the blue pigment in the hair and the remaining prayer rools inserted in the head. A Tibetan provenance may thus be ascribed. While the image exhibts characteristics of style that allow it to be ascribed a circa thirteenth century Tibetan provenance, serval elements in the work sugges it was intended to refer to an eastern Indian medieval statue, perhaps an important icon housed at Bodh Gaya, the premier site of Buddhist pilgrimage during the medieval period. In Nepalese-influenced Tibetan Buddha images of the thirteen Century, the faces are typically oval, necks are thin, and chest are broad, tapering to slender waists, as seen in a circa thirteenth century. The proportions of this Buddha figure are unsual- the shoulders are rounded and full, the neck is particulary short, and tha face is square- These features- short neck, round shoulders, and square face-appear in eastern Indian medieval Buddha images of the same icongoraphy, many with clear links to Bodh Gaya, as wiht a Buddha figure in the National Mueseum, New Delhi. Moreever, the robe end that falls from the Buddha's left shoulder consists of a thin strip with a realtively simple fishtail ending, in constracts to the more usual Nepalese and Tibetan interpretations, which normally consists of a broader flourish of cloth as seen in the Nepalese examples cited above. The design of this robe element often appears in medieval eastern Indian stone and metal Buddha images, as seen in the New Delhi image cited above.
