Folks, Granville Stuart’s Montana Strangler never (but once) wore masks. They struck swiftly and efficiently and shot or hanged the rustlers that prey on their herds. With concentrated violence, this vigilante force of 14 men too the lives of 28 hardcase killers and outlaws in a period of 14 days, finally killing the leader of the rustlers and burning their “Robber’s Roost” in the badlands. The author makes mention that it was rumored that future Teddy Roosevelt was one of the members of the Vigilantes - but it was never proved. OWENS (first name not given) – identified as a tough and cattle rustlers who was shot and killed with another by citizen members of the community. ROOSEVELT, Teddy – Twenty-six year old member of the The Stockgrowers Association. Later, President of the United States. STRINGER JACK “John” – leader of cattle rustlers. STUART, Granville * - Owner of the D-S Spread in Montana and leader of the Cattlemen and rumored head of the Cattlemens Vigilantee Committee. He was chairman of the meeting at Miles City, Montana of The Stockgrowers Association. THOMPSON, Willian – member of Vigilante Committee that caught and hung two cattle rustlers. WELLS, Anson – rancher whose cattle were rustled.
