An American favorite for many years. Don't rule out this variety when planting your garden. Home-grown Iceberg is much more flavorful than the heads available at the grocery store. And, yours can be chemical free!
A excellent source of Chlorophyl, Iron, Calcium, and Vitamins: A, B1, B2, C, and Niacin
Lettuce is a cool season crop, sow seeds in early spring and plant every 2 weeks for a continuous supply of fresh garden lettuce. Hold off sowing in the mid summer heat.
Seeds are tiny! Sow 1/16" deep in full sun and well drained soil. Space plants about 12" apart-lettuce can also be a container plant!
Lettuce can be grown in containers-I have grown in rectangular box type of containers. Be sure to keep watered-lettuce will turn bitter if the roots become dry.
Plant some basil, anise, garlic chives or dill around your lettuce to help keep invasive pests at bay. Do not use chemical sprays on lettuce. Fertilize every 3 weeks-I use fish emulsion.
Medium-size, compact heads
No chemicals are used in my garden.
