The Library [Paperback]

Product Details
Paperback: 40 pages
Publisher: Frances Lincoln Childrens Books (September 4, 2008)
Language: English
ISBN-10: 1845076079
condition: very good + Minor shelfwear.
The creators of The Money Tree paint a blithe yet affectionate portrait of a woman whose life centers on reading. Elizabeth Brown's obsession begins in childhood: "She didn't like to play with dolls,/ She didn't like to skate./ She learned to read quite early/ And at an incredible rate." Stewart's nimble verse follows the bibliophile through the years as she fills her home with books. Finally, "when volumes climbed the parlor walls/ And blocked the big front door,/ She had to face the awful fact/ She could not have one more." Elizabeth then decides to share her wealth: she donates her collection to the town, turns her home into a library and-of course-continues to read voraciously. Attuned to the story's humor and period setting, Small's (George Washington's Cows) airy illustrations charm with historical touches and soothing pastel hues. Triple-ruled black borders and filigreed corners suggest a family album of old, while black-and-white spot art highlights details of a singular life. The book's dedication adds a poignant note: "To the memory of the real Mary Elizabeth Brown, Librarian.

Click, Clack, Moo: Cows That Type [Student Edition] [Paperback]
Doreen Cronin
(Author), Betsy Lewin (Illustrator)
Product Details
Paperback: 32 pages
Publisher: Scholastic (2005)
Language: English
ISBN-10: 0439216486
condition: very good Plus. Some curls to the bottom cover
The literacy rate in Farmer Brown's barn goes up considerably once his cows find an old typewriter and begin typing. To the harassed farmer's dismay, his communicative cows quickly become contentious:
Dear Farmer Brown,
The barn is very cold at night. We'd like some electric blankets.
Sincerely,
The Cows
When he refuses to comply with their demands, the cows take action. Farmer Brown finds another note on the barn door: "Sorry. We're closed. No milk today." Soon the striking cows and Farmer Brown are forced to reach a mutually agreeable compromise, with the help of an impartial party--the duck. But this poor, beleaguered farmer's "atypical" troubles are not over yet!
This hilarious tale will give young rebels-in-the-making a taste of the power of peaceful protest and the satisfaction of cooperative give and take. Witty watercolors by award-winning illustrator Betsy Lewin (Snake Alley Band, Araminta's Paint Box) will make this a favorite for one and all, even if words such as "ultimatum" and "neutral" throw the younger set. (Ages 5 to 8)

The true-or-false book of horses [Paperback]
Patricia Lauber
(Author)
Product Details
Paperback: 32 pages
Publisher: Scholastic (2001)
ISBN-10: 0439274303
condition: new
Grade 2-4-"Horses hear sounds that we can't hear" and "A horse's teeth are clues to its age" are just 2 of the 14 intriguing statements introduced here. The true-or-false format is fun and readers who are interested in horses will find the wide variety of facts entertaining and educational. Precise details in the colorful illustrations reveal the look of cocked ears and swishing tails as their meanings are made clear. Nickers, snorts, and squeals-some of the essential sounds of horse communication-are succinctly explained and humorously translated by talking horses. There is enough information here for brief reports and the pictures are pleasant to study and browse. This lively glimpse at this creature's history, behavior, and anatomy should be a popular draw, particularly for young equestrians.

Ages 6-8. A picture book for older readers evokes Romanian Christmas traditions. While grudgingly helping her great-grandmother Anica trim her Christmas tree, Christine hears the story of a precious ornament given to Anica as a child by a mysterious stranger. Van Nutt's illustrations set the book apart from the usual mysterious stranger-angel tales, with the lavish embroidery motifs used in the page borders and on costumes standing out sharply against the white snow and the characters' gentle faces and luminous eyes. The book makes the subtle point that bright-eyed, little Anica still lives within the aged great-grandmother.

Those Can-Do Pigs [Paperback]
David McPhail (Author)
Product Details
Paperback: 26 pages
Publisher: Scholastic Inc.; First Printing edition (January 1998)
Language: English
ISBN-10: 0590032372
condition: very good. Tiny curls to bottom corner and readers bend.
Kindergarten-Grade 2 McPhail's pigs are back, and this time they can do just about anything, from fending off shark attacks to charming boa constrictors to flying. They travel in space, tickle generals out of their warmongering ways, and faithfully stand by their friends. The rhymed text?a catalogue of the animals' activities?doesn't always work, but the large, humorous watercolor illustrations shine. Readers will enjoy the pseudo-Superman and cowboy outfits, the pig-shaped water tank, and many other droll touches. Although this book doesn't have the surprise and sparkle of the title that spawned it, Pigs Aplenty, Pigs Galore (Dutton, 1993), it is worth considering. Laura Robb's collection of poems, Snuffles and Snouts (Dial, 1995), would partner it perfectly for a story hour headlining playful porkers.
