Mommie Dearest is a movie about Joan Crawford (Faye Dunaway) and her turbulent relationship with her adopted daughter Christina (Diana Scarwid). The movie begins with the successful actress Joan Crawford expressing her desire to have children. Since she has not yet given birth on her own, she decides to adopt. She eventually adopts two children, naming them Christina and Christopher. The movie focuses primarily on the relationship between Joan and Christina through Christina's childhood through young adulthood. During Christina's childhood, there are many memorable dramatic conflicts between Joan and Christina. Joan is depicted as an extremely abusive, overbearing mother who hits Christina and administers inappropriately harsh punishments for even the smallest infractions (the "no wire hangers" scene is especially memorable). The plot also depicts Joan's relationships with her boyfriends and the studio as contentious. The turbulence continues as Christina grows up, reflecting an intense love/hate relationship between the two. In the end, Joan has married, and been widowed by, the head of Pepsi, which secures her future financially as the movie roles dry up. After Joan dies, the reading of the will is the final straw for Christina, the final slap-in-the-face which motivates her to write the book upon which the movie is based.
