TIDE MARKS by H. M. Tomlinson Author of The Sea and the Jungle, Out of Sounding, Gallions Reach, All Our Yesterdays
If you are one of the limited but enthusiastic audience who already know Mr. Tomlinson through his London River and The Sea and the Jungle, you will anticipate something of the remarkable quality of this tale of his adventures.
Mr. Tomlinson left the soiled fogs of a London winter, and came at last, through the burning gateway of the Red Sea, to Singapore and the unexplored world beyond, - the Malay archipelago of misty blue and gold volcanic islands, dotting an infinity of shimmering ocean and sky, and still slumbering in an unremembered epoch of past time. Cruising among them in a Dutch trading vessel, he found adventure and magic. He listened to tales of Chinese slave-ships afire at sea, saw men and women of so many different colors that they cannot talk to one another, and gazed in the Java fish markets at the weird and naked wonders of creation brought up from the ocean abyss. He climbed the black volcano of Ternate, and caught a vision of the god that dwelt within its crater; he dodged tigers and fought leeches in a flood-swept Malayan jungle, and found his physical suffering more than rewarded by the strange radiance that gleamed through the forest before sunrise.
Here, among pageants of gorgeous beauty and color, flashes of humor and of epigram, is all the age-old mystery and terror of the East, recaptured in masterly and exquisite prose by one of the greatest writers of our time.
