"COLLEGI URBIS NOV EBORAC SIGILLUM MDCCCXCVIII"
"Respice, Adspice, Prospice,"
These words appears painted on side of ash tray
Translated: "The College of the City of New York founded 1847". The design expands upon the concept of the two-headed Roman god Janus, who looked to the past and to the future. The City College seal shows a woman's face in three aspects, looking to the three "Provinces of Scholarship" - the past, the present, and the future. This is the meaning of the motto, "Respice, Adspice, Prospice," which charges us to look back, look straight ahead, and look to the future as we are educated in life.
